The end of the calendar year is a difficult time for refugee and immigrant families in San Diego County, so Nile Sisters strives to relieve some of the stress by building partnerships with local businesses, schools, and organizations to collect household items, personal care items, and children’s essentials to distribute directly to the refugee and immigrant communities via two charitable programs—Adopt-a-Basket and Adopt-a-Family.

Adopt-a-Basket
Through the Adopt-a-Basket drive, donors may contribute essential household consumables, hygiene products, children’s items, including clothing, diapers, toys, and books, or prepaid gift cards from local grocery and retail stores. Nile Sisters volunteers organize donated items in reusable utility baskets and distribute them to families in need during the month of December. In 2015, Adopt-a-Basket donations touched the lives of 323 grateful recipients.

Adopt-a-Family
Through the Adopt-a-Family program, Nile Sisters pairs charitable donors (adopters) with newly resettled refugee or asylee families (adoptees). An intake survey helps Nile Sisters to develop a list of adoptees’ most pressing needs and wants, which Nile Sisters shares with potential adopters for their consideration. List items range from household equipment to winter-season essentials. After adopters select an adoptee family and list to sponsor, Nile Sisters facilitates introduction. Adopt-a-Family forges cross-cultural friendships and heart-warming learning experiences for all. In 2015, adopters sponsored 59 adoptees in the San Diego refugee and asylee community. For the security of all, Nile Sisters carefully screens all participants in the Adopt-a-Family program. View 2015 Adopt-a-Family campaign photos.»
