2021 Qualcomm San Diego Employee Giving Committee Selects NSDI for $12,000 Award
In June 2021, The Qualcomm San Diego Employee Giving Committee (SDEGC) selected NSDI for a $12,000 award aimed at employment facilitation for vulnerable populations. The award is part of the SDEGC Virtual Pitch Night, which harnesses the passion and interests of Qualcomm employees in impacting positive social change in their communities.
NSDI established LearnMore », a state-approved vocational training school in 2019 to provide in-demand healthcare training and employment facilitation to marginalized communities, including refugees, immigrants, and other displaced/underserved populations. The school offers accelerated healthcare training and supportive services that lead to in-demand healthcare careers and increased employability in the U.S. healthcare job market. To date, 64 participants have participated in the Nurse Assistant Training Program. In 2021, LearnMore became an approved test site for the NNAAP Certified Nursing Assistant exam and currently facilities the state certification exam for all students who complete the state-approved nurse assistant training program.
Celebrating National Women’s Week—May 9-15, 2021: Focus on FGM/C (Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting)
The week of May 9 – 15, 2021, is designated as National Women’s Health Week» (#NWHW) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women’s Health» (OWH). The weeklong observance highlights the importance of women and girl’s health and wellness. This year’s theme, “Ending the Epidemic and Elevating Women’s Health,” focuses on women’s health amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In alignment with this year’s theme, NSDI raises awareness of FGM/C (female genital mutilation/cutting), an illegal practice that involves partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Data suggests more than 513,000 girls and women» in the United States have experienced or are at risk of experiencing FGM/C. In California, the most impacted state, more than 57,000 women and girls have experienced or are at risk of experiencing FGM/C.

The virtual informational town hall will take place from 3:30 – 5:00 pm to provide information and education to Lemon Grove residents on smoke-free multi-unit housing, COVID-19, food assistance resources, 2020 Census(opens new window) », community safety programs and resources, and vocational training opportunities. NSDI | Los Angeles to Host Youth Advocacy Training Series: Tik Talk
Beginning August 22nd, 2020, NSDI | Los Angeles», will host a 4-day virtual advocacy series. In collaboration with African Communities Public Health Coalition», Antelope Valley Partners for Health», California Youth Advocacy Network», and UCSF’S The LOOP», NSDI Los Angeles has created an interactive and highly relevant training series, Tik Talk 2020», for youth throughout Los Angeles County.
This free and entirely virtual advocacy series is designed for high-school-aged youth to gain practical knowledge of civil discourse and how they can participate at the local level in making real change in their communities. Tik Talk 2020» uses tobacco as a lens to see the connection between public health and social justice, to equip youth with tools to become advocates for positive change.
NSDI | Los Angeles Participates in the City of Compton 2020 Census Caravan
In partnership with SCLC-SC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California»), NSDI | Los Angeles», participated in the City of Compton 2020 Census Caravan on July 28, 2020. More than a dozen community organizations and Councilmember Michelle Chambers» supported the procession.
The caravan covered nearly 20 miles of streets in Compton aimed at raising awareness of the 2020 Census».
Inaugural LearnMore Cohort Begin Accelerated 22-day Nurse Assistant Course
On June 17, 2019, the inaugural LearnMore» cohort began the 22-day weekday nurse assistant training course. The all-female cohort represent five different countries including, USA, Nigeria, Myanmar (Burma), Sudan, and South Sudan. The accelerated asset-building program trains students to obtain skills required of an entry-level healthcare career.
